Zinnia violaceae (Z. elegans)
Approximate seed count: 2,000 S./oz. (70 S./g.)

Plug Production
Sowing:Use a well drained, disease-free plug media. Avoid excess moisture in the plug media at sowing. Cover the seed with a medium layer of coarse-grade vermiculite at sowing.
Germination:Zinnias can be germinated equally well at temperatures that range from 65 to 72¡ãF (18 to 22¡ãC). Light is not required for germination. Maintain 95 to 97% relative humidity at germination.
Days to Germ:It takes about 2 to 3 days to germinate at the temperatures listed above. Germination may take a day or so longer at lower temperatures (around 65¡ãF/18¡ãC).
Plug Size:Zesty Zinnias can be produced in 288-trays. The average plug production time is 3 to 4 weeks. Do not hold the plugs too long, as this will cause delay in flowering.
Plant Growth Regulators:Growth regulators are recommended during plug production to produce quality finished plugs. Use foliar sprays of B-Nine at 2,500 ppm twice during the plug stage ¨C the first application can be done about 10 days after sowing, and second application can be done 1 week later.

Growing On to Finish
Container Size:4 to 4.5-in. (10 to 11.5-cm) pots or gallon (15-cm) containers.
Media:Use a well-drained, disease-free, soilless growing media with a pH of 5.8 to 6.0 and a medium level of initial nutrient charge.
Temperature:Days: 70 to 85¡ãF (21 to 29¡ãC), Nights: 60 to 68¡ãF (15 to 20¡ãC)
Light:Keep light levels high.
Irrigation & Fertilization:Maintain even moisture and avoid excessive wetness. Fertilize the crop weekly with 200 to 300 ppm N with a complete balanced fertilizer, maintaining a pH of 5.8 to 6.0. The EC of the media can be at 1.5 to 2.5 mmhos/cm (SME).
Plant Growth Regulators:Growth regulators are recommended for pack/container production. Foliar sprays of B-Nine at 3,500 ppm applied 2 to 3 times are beneficial for Zesty Zinnia. First application can be done 1 week after transplant, followed by a second application 1 week later. If necessary, a third application can be done 10 to 14 days later to hold the crop. If the crop is targeted to finish in late Spring or early Summer during warmer growing temperatures, try using a foliar spray of B-Nine at 5,000 ppm instead of 3,500 ppm.
Diseases: Avoid moisture/humidity condensation in the greenhouse, as this can cause Botrytis. Also incorporate a preventative fungicide program for Powdery Mildew.
